Sea Turtles in Trouble Environmental Photojournalism
A sea turtle is seen with a "safe" red light nesting near midnight at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge near Melbourne Beach. According to Dr. Llewellyn "Doc" Ehrhart, for loggerheads, it is arguably the best nesting beach on the entire rim of the Atlantic Ocean in part due to the protection is receives from development. Scientific estimates indicate that only one in 1000 hatchlings will survive to become a reproductive adult sea turtle. Loss of nesting beaches due to coastal overdevelopment hinder turtles from laying eggs. Light pollution which causes hatchlings to go AWAY from the water and predators ranging from raccoons, birds and even domesticated animals have the odds stacked against them before they ever reach the water.
